Answer the following questions to determine whether you should be looking at IP:
1. Do you have an up to date IP (LAN and cabling) infrastructure?
i. Are your routers robust enough to handle voice traffic too?ii. Is your cabling infrastructure at least CAT5?
2. Does your company have multiple sites?
ii. Do you share data between the sites?
iii. Do you have an application that would be of benefit across sites?
iv. Can you assign a dollar benefit to connecting your sites together?
If you answered yes to both questions in 1, then you can explore IP options. If you answered no, plan on additional expenses to get your infrastructure up to date.
If you answered yes to iii. and iv on the second question, you are a candidate for an IP solution and the discussion is really going to show a cost benefit analysis.
